Martini, also known as a Dry Martini, is the classic of all classics. That doesn’t mean everybody likes this cocktail based on gin and vermouth. It has a very specific taste, dry as the name says it. You either love or hate the Martini cocktail.
You can prepare this cocktail in 2 seperate ways. Shaken or stirred. I think the most famous sentence ever is James Bond, asking for a Martini, “Shaken, not stirred”. Next to these options the garnish is important to. I like to add an olive. This gives the martini an extra flavor and because of the olive oil makes it look a little bit dirty. That’s why the name, Dirty Martini.
What do you need for a Dirty Martini?
Gin (2 parts)
Vermouth (1 part)
Olives (3 on a stick)
1 part = 30 ml
How do you make a Dirty Martini?
First chill a martini glass with some ice. Do this before you start other preparations. As i mentioned before you can make this cocktail in two different ways. Shaken and stirred.
Pour the gin and vermouth into the glass. Don’t use ice, this keeps the cocktail as pure as possible. Give it a small stir in the glass and add the olives for garnish. You can also give it a stir with the olives to make it an extra dirty martini. If you don’t like it dirty, leave the olives out of the picture.
Use a shaker for this version of martini’s. Put some ice into the shaker and add the gin and vermouth. Give it a good shake of around 5 second and strain the cocktail into the glass, without the ice that was in the shaker. Here you can also give it a last stir with your olives on a stick to make it dirty. And again, if you don’t like it dirty, be sure to leave out the olives.

Olives for flavor
If you use an olive for the extra flavor be sure to use your favorite olive as garnish. Every olive had a different flavor and this also makes a difference in the tasting.
Also very know and fanouw, the Vesper Martini. Again especially from the James Bond movie Casino Royale. In this versions of martini’s beside gin we also use vodka, lilet blanc and a lemon as garnish. In the Green Vesper Martini the vodka is replaced by, don’t be scared… Absinth!
How Martinez became a Martini
The name of this famous cocktail comes form a mineworker. He worked the mines every day and after work he went to the same bar every day. Where he ordered a strong cocktail. The bartender served him a combination of gin, vermouth and marachino. Because he drank the cocktail so often it was named after him. After a few cocktail he couldn’t pronounce the “z” anymore, and so the Martinez became Martini.
